What is oxalic acid?

Oxalic acid is colorless crystal or white powder at room temperature, good hygroscopic, soluble in water, ethanol and ether. Slightly soluble in ch-loroform. Oxalic acid has a melting point of about 190-191°C and decomposes into carbon dioxide and carbon oxide during heating. It is strongly acidic and reacts with bases to form oxalates. It is also reductive and can be used to remove rust spots and bleach. Due to the toxicity of oxalic acid, it needs to be handled carefully to avoid inhalation or contact with the skin. It is commonly used in industrial cleaning, dyes, chemical analysis and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
